Welcome to the Pioneer Valley Books Leveled Reading Assessment
Learning to read is an exciting adventure for every student, but finding the right books to fit your students' needs can be challenging. The Leveled Reading Assessment (LRA) is designed to help teachers select books at the appropriate reading level that will help their students grow as readers and thinkers. This assessment is designed for students reading Kindergarten through Grade 7; however, it can also be used with older students who may be struggling to learn to read at a certain level. This assessment can be used in conjunction with other comprehensive assessments or to monitor student progress. To read more about assessments, such as how to take running records, go to our Resources page.
There are three parts to the assessment that the student must complete. Part One involves reading a few high frequency words. Part Two involves reading a few stories to gauge the appropriate reading level. You will also have the option to read to your students three comprehension questions and have your student answer them. When you select engaging books at the right level for your student, they will progress as a reader and will quickly be ready to read more and more challenging books.
You will have the option to run the assessment on two devices, for example on a phone and laptop. There will be both a QR code or a link to set this up. The benefit of using two devices is your student will not see the scoring as this can be distracting to some students.
